Steinway Model A Grand #68288 (1890)
Steinway Model A Grand #68288 (1890)
This piano is an amazing piece of old-world craftsmanship, and is a rare early example of a full 88-note piano, at a time when most were 85 notes in scale. Assembled right here in Astoria with stunning mahogany, fully refinished in a warm satin sheen. The original carved ornate music desk sets the tone while the column legs and delicate curves invite and entice you to try the original ivory and ebony keys. Thanks to a brand new Ciresa spruce soundboard and new strings and bridges, the piano has an incredible response and can go from a soft purr to a full roar with ease. The 6’ scale is a perfect size for both amateur and serious piano players, while the case is still compact enough for New York City spaces.
The action has been rebuilt with Steinway & Sons repetitions, shanks and hammers, and the damper underlever system has been modernized as well. We have also improved the key weighting and geometry to help the action feel as responsive as possible. This is our finest piano in the shop and we are extremely proud of it. Please plan a visit to let us know your opinion as this beautiful instrument is just starting its new life.
This a chance to own a late 18th century rebuilt Steinway at a fraction of the price of the larger stores’ rebuilds. We maintain a smaller space with a smaller overhead, so please visit soon to take advantage of this opportunity!
